The SalamPay money transfer service has integrated artificial intelligence technologies to recognize passports of citizens from Russia and other CIS countries. Smart ID Engine, developed by the Russian company Smart Engines, simplifies and speeds up the new user registration process. The new feature operates using proprietary ultra-compact 4.6-bit neural networks and is now available in the SalamPay mobile application for iOS and Android, Smart Engines representatives informed CNews.
SalamPay is a payment service that allows transfers to CIS countries at favorable exchange rates with zero commission. Additionally, it offers extra features such as airline ticket purchases and access to music content. Currently, over 1.5 million users actively utilize this service.
"When choosing a document recognition system, we focused on two critical factors," said Timur Mantashov, CEO of SalamPay. "Firstly, the AI should reliably recognize passports not only from Russia but also from CIS countries. Secondly, the solution must function entirely on-premise, even on budget smartphones. Smart Engines' products meet these criteria, allowing us to implement best practices in customer service by eliminating manual data entry on smartphones."
The AI-based Smart ID Engine software recognizes passports from Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Azerbaijan in under one second. After recognition, passport data is automatically populated into SalamPay’s registration form, providing users immediate access to the service.
The recognition speed is achieved using proprietary ultra-lightweight 4.6-bit neural networks, which operate 40% faster than traditional 8-bit neural networks. Recognition accuracy is ensured by the new "Da Vinci" neural network architecture, capable of detecting and processing documents in any position—angled, upside-down, or even mirrored—and accurately identifying their geometry.
All computations occur exclusively on the user's device, without transmitting images to third parties or external services. The solution is delivered as an SDK with APIs compatible with smartphones, desktops, and servers, ensuring seamless integration into any IT infrastructure.
