You've arrived in a new country, full of opportunities for yourself and your family. But you can't start working right away. There are many steps to take before you can get your first job and begin providing for your loved ones.
That's why we're here – to help you understand and explain why a work permit is essential.
Work Permit: What is it and why is it needed?
- A work permit is an official document that confirms your right to work legally in the Russian Federation. This document is crucial as it ensures your protection and guarantees your rights as an employee.
- Important: If you entered Russia on a visa, it is your employer who obtains the work permit for you. If you arrived under a visa-free regime, you need to obtain a patent instead of a work permit. We will cover this in a separate article.
Key Features of a Work Permit:
- Issued by the employer: The work permit is always arranged by your employer. This can be an individual, an organization, an individual entrepreneur, or their representative. For example, a permit can be issued for a resident of the free port of Vladivostok, a resident of a socio-economic development territory, or a participant in an innovative scientific and technological center.
- Individual approach: A work permit is issued separately for each foreign employee. This means each of you will have your own unique document.
- Geographical validity: The work permit is valid only in the region specified in the application. If you are a highly qualified specialist (HQS), a permit valid in several regions may be arranged for you.
Validity Period:
For regular foreign workers, the permit is issued for the duration of the employment contract, but for no more than 1 year.
- For highly qualified specialists (HQS), the validity period can be up to 3 years.
- What Information is Included in the Work Permit?
- Your work permit will include the following key details:
- Series and number of the permit itself, as well as the series and number of the form.
- Full details of your employer.
- Your personal data as a foreign employee.
- The region or regions where your permit is valid.
- The validity period of your permit.
Additional Note: In some cases, before obtaining a work permit, the employer must first obtain a permit to attract and use foreign workers. This is an additional step that ensures the legality of your employment.

Why is This Important for You?
Having a work permit is your guarantee of stability. It protects you from unscrupulous employers and ensures your right to official employment, medical care, and social benefits.
