What is IMEI and Why Is It Important for Migrants?

For many migrants living and working in Russia, a mobile phone is an essential tool for staying in touch with family and sending money transfers from Russia to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Azerbaijan. In this context, understanding what IMEI is becomes especially useful.

What is IMEI?

IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit identification number assigned to every mobile device that supports a SIM card. This number helps mobile operators and law enforcement identify the device, for example, in case it is lost or stolen.

Why is IMEI important for migrant workers?

IMEI may be needed when visiting the Sakharovo Migration Center or dealing with issues related to migration laws and updates, especially when registering a device or blocking a stolen phone.

How to find your phone’s IMEI?

There are several easy ways to find your IMEI:

  • On the device packaging. The IMEI is usually printed on the box the phone came in.
  • By dialing a code. Enter *#06# on your phone’s keypad and press call. The IMEI code will appear on the screen. Dual SIM phones have two IMEI numbers.
  • In phone settings. Look under “About phone” or “Device information.”
  • On the phone itself. Sometimes the number is printed on the SIM card tray or under the removable battery.
  • In the documentation. Check the user manual or warranty card.

If you have trouble finding the IMEI yourself, you can always ask for help from your mobile operator’s staff.

Why does it matter for migrants?

Knowing your IMEI helps protect your device and personal data. If your phone is lost or stolen, you can quickly block it, which is especially important for those who regularly send money transfers from Russia to CIS countries and rely on stable communication.

Also, when processing documents at the Sakharovo Migration Center or handling migration-related matters, the IMEI may be required to confirm device ownership.
