Working in a different occupation than listed in your patent? How to avoid fines and problems with your migration status

Working in a different occupation than listed in your patent? How to avoid fines and problems with your migration status

Problem. Many people change jobs but forget to update the occupation in their patent. In regions where the occupation is specified in the document, this violates migration legislation: you may be fined, your patent may be annulled, or you may even be deported. For labor migrants, this means the risk of losing income and legal status, missing document deadlines, and making life harder for the family that relies on your support.

Where the occupation is indicated. In Moscow and the Moscow Region, the occupation is generally not indicated in the patent. But if you move to other regions where the occupation is fixed in the document, you must add it. If you have changed your field (for example, from “courier” to “loader”), don’t delay updating—inspectors rely on the current data in your patent and registration records.

How to change the occupation in your patent:

  • Contact the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) subdivision or an MFC at your place of registration and fill out an application to amend your patent.
  • Submit the application along with your passport, valid patent, and payment receipt(s) to the MVD or MFC officer. Make sure all payments are up to date.
  • Receive the updated document—usually within 10 calendar days. It is safe to work in the new occupation only after receiving the updated patent.

Practical tips:

  • Before applying, carefully check your full name, passport details, the region where the patent is valid, and the correct job title in Russian.
  • Follow migration news, as requirements vary by region and change over time. Subscribe to our channel where we regularly publish updates for labor migrants.
  • In Moscow, it’s convenient to get advice and submit documents via the Sakharovo Migration Center (often searched as “Migration Center Sakharovo”).
  • Keep copies of your application, receipts, and notifications—this will help during inspections or disputes. If you want to check your documents online, download our app and use the Migrant ID feature.
  • Don’t postpone updates: working in an occupation not listed in your patent can be grounds for refusal to extend it.
